Primary Leadership Competencies for New Leaders
**OBJECTIVES: 1. Understand the difference between leading and managing. 2. Understand how relationships and team dynamics will have a tremendous impact on your effectiveness as a leader. 3. Learn techniques to improve relationships through self-awareness. **ABSTRACT: You've worked hard, paid your dues, and finally gotten that promotion you've been dreaming of. Technical expertise will only get you so far when you become a leader. Being successful will require you begin to learn new skills and techniques that will help you to better care for and empower your team - and yourself. This workshop will teach you some of the essential skills required for you to become the leader you desire, and your team deserves.
Conflict Prevention & Resolution in the Lab
**OBJECTIVES: 1. Understand and identify common triggers to conflict in the lab 2. Ability to assess personal conflict styles and identify conflict preferences in others 3. Learn about strategies to prevent and manage conflict in the lab **ABSTRACT: Conflict in the lab affects productivity and negatively impacts interpersonal relationships when not effectively managed. While conflict may be inevitable, it is a fundamental part of relationships between people who work together. As individuals our behaviors vary in conflict. We will review the top triggers to workplace conflict and strategies to minimize conflict before it begins. Using the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TK), participants will learn about different behaviors during conflict and in what situations each preference is effective. Using the mode instrument, participants will identify their default conflict behavior style. Understanding which styles to use in different situations enables individuals to appreciate how using different conflict management styles impact group and individual dynamics, empowering them to select the best approach. In addition to lecture participants will be provided with scenarios, break into small groups, and given the opportunity to apply the TK to develop effective conflict management strategies in the lab.
  Motivation
**OBJECTIVES: 1. Understand intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. 2. Understand motivational theories. 3. Understanding how to enhance motivation through mindfulness. **ABSTRACT: An effective leader must understand an employee’s motivational needs to assist the employee in developing intrinsic factors, such as autonomy and mastery, to reach their full potential. Aligning employee’s motivational needs with outcome goals reduces stress through understanding employee resource needs. Measuring motivation is essential in understanding how to improve employee productivity. Determining the underlying motivation assists with proper engagement.
